Hello, today I will share with you the seven keys to influencing others. Before we start the show, I can only ask you to subscribe to the podcast on the platform you're listening to. So every time we have a new episode, you will be notified Cheers. To be effective in your workplace, you must be able to influence people. Why? Well, having influence in the workplace has clear value. Let me explain. By having an influence in the workplace, you get to be an effective, persuasive leader. Because influence means opening doors. Influence means getting people to listen to you. And then to act on your directions. Influence means leveraging opportunities, influence in the workplace from the perspective of getting things done, and getting effective results. And great projects and great delivery for your clients etc are all based on you having an influence because if you have no influence means you have limited power, but you're not fooling yourself. In addition, to have an influence at work, you also need to be a positive influence. What that means is the energy you put out, affects others positively. In order to be a positive influence in your workplace, you must strive to put out positive energy with all those you interact with. Doing so will improve your relationship with your team, with your run colleagues, and of course, your clients out and ultimately present you as an approachable and effective leader. So the concept of a positive influence is all about communicating with resonance. Community communicate in a way that builds people up, communicate in a way that specifically gets people to not only listen to you but potentially follow you. That's the power of positive influence.
It's more important than ever to be able to communicate and command influence because of the increased pressure of the workplace, and the marketplace on getting results. It all comes down to your approach, I will share with you seven key areas that I believe will help you influence others. And the first one is straight off the bat is visual influence. And what does visual influence me? It means that the power of looking, being packaged in a way to win, you got to really understand that if you don't look the parts people do not believe you. Unfortunately, that might sound you know, a little bit confronting for some people. But the reality is people buy locks. If people did not believe in locks, there wouldn't be a concept of Facebook or Instagram or even LinkedIn for that matter. You know, there's a reason why you have your photo on LinkedIn. It's all also around visual influence. So the visual aspect, no diff of a human being no different to a product is important. And especially if you're looking at a human being like a product. And of course, I don't actually mean their product. But in this case, let's use it as an example as a product, no different to the supermarket shelf. If the visual influence is not there, potentially, they're not going to get bought. Or if they do get bought, they get bought at a discount.
The second one is verbal persuasion. Your words are everything. Yes, they do matter and matter dramatically more than we think words have power. And virtually it's about using your words wisely. The tone, the Annunciation, the pronunciation the accent, all play a role in persuading people to listen to you, to hear you and of course, more importantly, if required. Why act on your instructions in this case, or whatever words you're using to influence them and get them into action. So words are important words that play a role. And of course, Choose your words wisely.
The third key is relationship and trust-building. Now, relationship and trust-building is based on AQ emotional intelligence, building rapport. Having a human connection, building trust, and long-standing relationships normally come from the concept of emotional intelligence. And if you specifically, let's say, you're more introverted, for instance, as an example, well, then an opportunity to build your emotional intelligence, because emotional intelligence, not only is it relevant for sales, and for marketing, and, and so on, but it's also relevant in virtually human connection. And without relationship building, in the workplace, of course, in business, or even one on one, then you're really offering, you know, you're creating a lot of deficit for yourself, that at times, you might not be aware how drastic that is. The fourth one is self-promotion, self promotion is fairly self-explanatory. And the reason it's important, you know, and you can do that with us, you know, what we call is a humble bragging approach is this if you don't promote yourself, who will do it for you. Now, a lot of successful people currently end in history, had professionals like myself, doing the promotion for them, there might be also a concept around public relations, there might be marketing experts and digital experts and so on. So the concept that could happen, and would happen either by yourself or somebody else. But in this case, self-promotion is regarded as something that you own. And it's also a sign of self-confidence, you know, and self-worth. Because if you're doing the right thing out there, why would you be afraid to get the word out, but if you're shy, and I get that, and I understand what that's like, at times, a lot of my clients have certainly got a fear around self-promotion, it's okay, it's about basically giving it a shot. And it's not about just bragging, bragging, bragging, it's about really putting out some of the good messages about the great work that you're doing. Because if you don't do it, or somebody else does it for you, then potentially the world doesn't find out about how great you are.
The next key is positioning. Positioning really is all about what you stand for. So that means as per the target market, your clients and so on. It's, it's how do you want to be seen, you know, what differentiates you, what makes you stand out, and what makes you memorable, that means in the eyes of your customers, eye, and of course, in the eyes, of your customers versus your competitors. So positioning is key, you know, and a good example of positioning is this, if you want to be, let's say, from a high net worth point of view, a diamond, a polished, well-positioned diamond, there's a big difference to that, as opposed to a rough diamond, because a rough diamond will not have the same value. And of course, positioning is about getting that right sparkle in the right market segment. So you can get maximum value. So you know, so positioning plays a big part. And it's something that a lot of people think about, but at times get fairly wrong.
The other key that I'd like to mention is what we call is seven as political savviness or political, organizational 70 years. Now, the reality of the world is these politics are everywhere, in an organization, especially a corporation, less so by the way for an entrepreneurial business, but definitely, a corporation, a government, even NGOs, political seven, this is essential. Why? Because people are there for their careers. And what happens is if Korea is number one, and that's all you've got, you need the political skills to survive in a world where competition is virtually unlimited. And of course, you've got the pressures from an economic point of view or from a COVID perspective with, you know, more competition for particular jobs, etc, then political savviness is essential, more so than in the past. Because what happens in desperate times is this, people definitely become desperate. What does that mean, in desperate times people become more political, some backstabbing increases, you know, reputation, damage, type of campaigns increase, and so on. So what you want to do is get sensitive, that concept, that times politics exists, do not go into now around that and get more politically savvy around that. And as long as you become, you know, and you recognize that that's actually a skill that you might want to get better at, of course, then the opportunities to learn more about that. And of course, you can learn it. As long as you know, you've recognized that that's a skill that you need, I certainly say yes, you need to learn that skill to sensual.
And finally, the last key is leveraging connections, and networks, what we call Korean allies. And the best way I can describe this is really about chutzpah. It's about, you know, how are you building the relationships and networks, because, without the networks, life becomes hard. So let me give you an example. And I've been quoted on this before, give me a person with all the connections, and is not that sharp, or even that intelligent, as opposed to the guy or gal that's got all the intelligence and so on, but is not connected. What does that mean? Well, the person with that connection will need a long time to build those networks. And of course, in the meantime, lose many opportunities. With a person with the connections, specifically, even if they are not that sharp, we can make that connection work and open doors, because connections are all about leverage, where the other poor guy, right and our St. Paul, without making them feel like a victim is it takes a lot longer, it's more organic, so meaning it's a lot slower. But the key here is doesn't matter. If you're one or the other. The key here is to recognize that connections are everything and leveraging your networks open up opportunities like nothing else.
Before I finished the show, let me share with you how I discovered the importance of how to influence others. Well, the interesting thing, in my experience around this is, you know, it's not like, specifically, my mum and dad taught me how to learn, you know, the concept of influence, or specifically around you know, how to utilize connections, I had to learn that through mentors from an early age and mentors helped me understand that when you understand the influence and the concept of, you know, around influences also the concept of gravitas, and connections and chutzpah like I've just mentioned, then, basically the world looks different at you, you know, they look up at you from the point of view, oh, you know, how can we sort of work together with you. And that's exactly what happened to me. So from that, you know, and I've mentioned before on my podcast by winning awards, and getting to meet some good people along the way, that opened up many opportunities and of course, media at the same time, that also is part of influence as well. And you know, and getting written up by some great journalists out there, getting published as an author, all these are part of influence. So that specifically is how that helped me and down the road, I will share more about how I have learned more about the importance of influence and how that specifically has helped me and of course, many of our clients.
